President and Chief Medical Officer, Emergency Medicine and Hospital Medicine

Chris Newton, MD, FACEP, serves as the President and Chief Medical Officer of Emergency Medicine and Hospital Medicine for Envision. Dr. Newton is a board-certified emergency medicine physician with more than 25 years of experience caring for patients and uplifting care teams.

Before assuming his position in 2025, Dr. Newton has held various leadership roles within Envision, including Chief Clinical Officer, Central Group President and Regional Vice President, leading emergency medicine and hospital medicine teams.

Dr. Newton’s love of science and his father, who was a physician in Scotland, inspired him at a young age. During high school, his father would take him on rounds to meet the care team and patients during the holidays. He believed that seeing patients receive compassionate, high-quality care and clinicians connect with them in a meaningful way represented the best of humanity. He wanted to do his part to help people and make the world a healthier, better place.

Throughout his career Dr. Newton has provided mentorship to those he works with in both clinical and non-clinical settings. He is a distinguished author, having published a comprehensive textbook on emergency medicine along with numerous book chapters, abstracts and peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Newton obtained his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in Scotland, United Kingdom. He completed a family practice residency in Edinburgh before relocating to the United States to pursue his emergency medicine residency training at the University of Michigan, where he served as Chief Resident during his final year and graduated in June 2002.

Clinical care is provided by physicians and advanced practice providers (clinicians) through professional entities affiliated with Envision.
