Joshua Bloomstone, MD, MSc, FASA, SSGB, became Chief Medical Officer of Envision Healthcare in August 2023. Dr. Bloomstone is a senior-level healthcare administration executive and practicing board-certified anesthesiologist. He has dedicated his more than 30-year career to ensuring patients receive high-quality care, clinicians understand the importance of providing patient-centered care, and education represents the foundation upon which evolution, innovation, transformation and quality improvement reside.
Dr. Bloomstone is widely recognized as a thought leader in perioperative medicine and care coordination. He most recently served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Innovation and Practice Transformation at Envision, providing strategic leadership for clinical and technical innovation. Since joining Envision in 2002, Dr. Bloomstone has been instrumental in designing and building patient quality and safety data and reporting systems. He has also led efforts to enhance the delivery, quality and reliability of care by using data and standardizing evidenced-based best practices and clinical protocols.
Dr. Bloomstone earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1993. He then completed his medical internship at Beth Israel Hospital and his residency in anesthesiology and critical care at Massachusetts General Hospital. He advanced from chief resident to esteemed faculty at Harvard Medical School, receiving the Henry K. Beecher Clinical Teacher of the Year Award in 1999 and the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Chairman’s Award in 2002. In 2017, Dr. Bloomstone became the first American candidate to graduate with an MSc in perioperative medicine from the University College London (UCL) where, in 2018, he was awarded the UCL Dean’s Prize in Perioperative Medicine for his master’s degree work.
Dr. Bloomstone sits on multiple boards and work groups and belongs to several professional organizations. He has been a lecturer at numerous conferences and has been published extensively in the last 20 years. In addition, he is an active participant and contributor to the Outcomes Research Consortium and focuses his scholarly work on perioperative risk, risk assessment and the development of novel tools to assess perioperative outcomes.
Dr. Bloomstone grew up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has a passion for aviation and holds an instrument rating, is a life member of the Air Safety Foundation and served as a United States Civil Air Patrol Captain and Medical Officer (KDVT Sq. 302) from 2008 until 2011.
